Urbana, IL—August 14, 2013— “I couldn’t believe it! I looked at my ticket again and again,” said Deeshawn Merriweather-Bragg after scratching an Emerald Green 7s lottery ticket and instantly winning $250,000. “I still can’t believe it. I never thought something like this would happen to me!”
Merriweather-Bragg has lived in Urbana all her life. She was at home when she used a coin to scratch her Emerald Green 7s ticket and instantly won a quarter of a million dollars. “I always use the first coin that comes out of my purse heads up,” she said. After discovering her win, she immediately signed the back of the ticket and kept it in her Bible before presenting it at the Illinois Lottery Prize Center in Springfield.
“This win gives me a new lease on life. I’ve got five kids and five grandkids to help,” she said. Plans for the windfall include paying bills and buying a house. When asked if she had advice for other lottery players, Merriweather-Bragg said, “Never give up, you really can win.”
The winning ticket was purchased at Circle K, 1821 South Philo Road in Urbana. The store will receive a $2,500 bonus, 1 percent of the prize amount, for selling a winning ticket. Emerald Green 7s is a $5 instant ticket that offers over 100,000 prizes of $25 or more and a top prize of $250,000. For more information, please visit www.illinoislottery.com.
