Palatine, IL—November 20, 2013 — Wood Dale Firefighter Michael Thomson was out with a few co-workers during their lunch break when he decided to try his luck and buy a Halloween Millionaire Raffle ticket. “We each bought a ticket. I never thought I would be the lucky one!” Thomson said when he presented his $1 million winning ticket –bearing Raffle number 40229 – at the Illinois Lottery Prize Center in Des Plaines.

Thomson was at the firehouse when he discovered his win. One of his co-workers told him someone had won $1 million with a Halloween Raffle ticket purchased at WD Tobacco, the same store where they bought their tickets. Thomson called his girlfriend and asked her to verify the winning numbers on the Lottery’s website, illinoislottery.com. “When she read the winning numbers to me I couldn’t stop staring at my ticket. I couldn’t believe it!” The news of his win spread like fire and the cheers could almost be heard down the block from the firehouse. “Everyone was so happy for me.”

The lucky Palatine resident said he wasn’t the only one who would enjoy this special Halloween treat. “I am buying a new house with a huge backyard for Ariel - my 100 pound dog. We currently live in a condo and she is still growing!” Ariel is an English Mastiff. Plans for the windfall also include investing.

The winning ticket was purchased at WD Tobacco, 355 Georgetown Square, in Wood Dale. The retailer will receive a $10,000 bonus, 1 percent of the prize amount, for selling the winning ticket.

The Lottery is still on the lookout for the lucky player who won $500,000 in the October 3 Halloween Raffle early-bird drawing. The $500,000 winner, who has yet to come forward, purchased the winning ticket (#31888) at Mar-Shell Station, 2922 East 24th Road, in Marseilles.

Halloween Millionaire Raffle was played like a typical raffle game. Each $20 raffle ticket contained a unique number automatically generated by the Lottery terminal. Raffle tickets were sold in sequential order throughout the state beginning with ticket number 000,001. To win one of the top prizes, a raffle ticket must exactly match one of the winning number sequences selected in the October 3 and/or November 1 drawings. Leading up to the November 1 grand prize drawing, 3,358 players won $100 instant-win raffle prizes.
