University Park, IL— November 21, 2013 — Jarvis and Mauretia Carter have been playing the same lottery numbers at the same gas station in Bridgeview for the last six years. On a recent trip to visit family in Milwaukee they decided to try their luck somewhere new. “I told myself I really wanted to win a prize by Christmas, so we decided to try buying our ticket at a different place. I’m very happy we did!” said Jarvis after winning $1,000,000 in the November 2 Powerball drawing.

A few days after the drawing Jarvis was on his way home when he stopped at a gas station to check his ticket. When the clerk told him he matched the first five numbers - 13 - 23 - 24 - 27 - 40 - (17) - he froze. When Jarvis didn’t react the clerk gave him a printout of the draw results to show him what he won. Jarvis took the ticket and walked back to his car in shock. “I called my wife immediately and said ‘we did it, we did it!’ We won before Christmas!”

Jarvis and Mauretia Carter were high school sweethearts and have been married for 32 years. They have three children and three grandchildren. Jarvis works in a steel mill and Mauretia works for a collections agency. They plan to pay bills, share with family, and remodel their house.

The winning ticket was purchased at Speedway, 19880 Crawford Avenue in Matteson. The retailer will receive a $10,000 bonus, equal to 1 percent of the prize amount, for selling the winning ticket. When asked what advice they would share with other lottery players Jarvis said “Keep playing and be patient.”
