Chicago, IL - August 15, 2012— When Bob Layeux went out with a friend last Friday night, he did not expect to end the evening as a millionaire. “My friend said he read in the newspaper that someone in Rockford won a big lottery prize. When I got home I checked my ticket right away on the Illinois Lottery website and saw my quick pick numbers on the screen,” he said. The retired Rockford resident won $1 million in the August 8, 2012 Powerball draw.
Layeux immediately called his daughter, Katie, and asked her to come over “to see something on my computer.” The two then called his son and other daughter. “They were pretty excited,” Layeux said. Plans for the windfall include buying a vacation home and investing for his four grandsons’ education. “I might have a big dinner party at a restaurant for all of my family and friends,” he added.
The winning ticket was purchased at Logli, 6410 East State Street in Rockford, where Layeux does his weekly grocery shopping. “We’re so happy that one of our customers has become a millionaire,” said Logli Co-Manager Keith Mortensen.
The Powerball jackpot has swelled to $320 million for tomorrow night’s drawing – making it the fourth largest jackpot in Powerball history. In 2006, eight workers in Nebraska split a $365 million Powerball jackpot. Lottery officials predict that if the Powerball jackpot rolls Wednesday night, the jackpot could become the highest Powerball jackpot of all time.
Powerball sales in Illinois stay in Illinois. Since Illinois introduced this multi-state lottery game, Powerball has contributed an estimated $120 million to the Illinois Common School Fund and Capital Projects Fund.
