October 23, 2012 – Chicago IL – “I won with a $1 quick pick!” said Carl Niess after matching all five numbers -08 - 09 - 16 - 32 - 39 and winning $250,000 in the October 5 Mega Millions drawing.
“It was late when I checked the numbers on the Illinois Lottery website. I had to wake up my wife to have her double check my ticket,” Niess told Lottery staff. Niess, 63, is a part-time furniture salesman. He and his wife, Linda, plan to use the money to pay bills and “we’ll put a little away for retirement.”
The winning ticket was purchased at 7-Eleven, located at 1 Wolf Road in Prospect Heights. “I buy my tickets there as often as I can,” said Niess, adding, “I stop in for coffee and they take care of me – they are very friendly.” The store will receive a bonus of $2,500 from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
An occasional Mega Millions player, Niess also plays Lucky Day Lotto and Lotto. His largest lottery win prior to this was $100. When asked if the lucky lottery player had any advice for others, he said, “Play smart; you don’t have to over-do it. It only takes a dollar!”
