KANSAS, IL—August 29, 2012—Financial debt will soon be a thing of the past for Roy and Tiffany McCammon of Brocton, who won a top prize in the Lottery’s “$500 A Week For Life” instant game. Paying off Tiffany’s car and the couple’s Brocton home will be among the first things they do with the lump-sum payment they opted to receive.
Their Lottery payment, $380,000 less 30 percent withholding, will arrive in two or three weeks. In addition to paying off the house and car, the couple plan to begin college funds for their two young children, ages 8 and 3. “This will allow us to start over with no debt,” said Roy, age 39.
Roy bought the ticket on Saturday, August 18 after leaving his job at the grain elevator in Casey. He bought the ticket at Country Junction/BP in Kansas, and scratched the ticket before driving home. After double- and triple-checking the ticket, he sent Tiffany a text message that read, “I have the best news ever!” Tiffany, 30, said winning the Lottery really didn’t cross her mind while she waited for her husband to arrive home.
There were cries of joy from the happy couple, after they confirmed the win. They drove to Springfield the following Monday (after two sleepless nights), and presented the ticket to officials at the Lottery claim center.
“It was completely out of the blue,” said Tiffany. “I had no idea Roy had purchased a few scratch tickets, but I’m glad he did!”
With two children and a two bedroom home, the McCammons are considering upgrading to a larger home, or adding a bedroom to their existing home. “One thing’s certain: we’ll put it to good use,” said Roy, an occasional Lottery player. The lucky couple received an oversized, commemorative check from Lottery officials today at the store.
For selling the winning ticket, Country Junction will receive a bonus of $3,800 from the Lottery. Asked what advice he would offer other players, Roy said “have faith and play responsibly. If it’s meant to happen, it will; and if it doesn’t, the money goes to a good cause.”
The Lottery offers four versions of the Cash for Life instant game, with top prizes of either $500-, $1,000-, $2,500- or $5,000-a –week-for-life. To date, 33 people have won top prizes in Cash For Life games.
