Powerball jackpot rolls to $170 million

IL Lottery’s Powerball spot to air during Super Bowl XLVI

CHICAGO – The Illinois Lottery is celebrating the second anniversary of Powerball in Illinois today with a bit of jackpot fever. The current $170 million jackpot rolled for the ninth time on Saturday, Jan 28 after no ticket matched the winning numbers 5-33-41-54-59 – the Powerball red number was 13.

Since its premiere on January 31, 2010, Powerball sales in Illinois have contributed an estimated $92 million to the Common School Fund and awarded over $66 million in prizes to 5.4 million winners. A total of 311 top prizes have been won in Illinois. Under the new Powerball game, second place winners will now be awarded cash prizes of $1,000,000, instead of the previous second place prize of $200,000 – creating more millionaires in Illinois.

To celebrate and promote the new Powerball game, the Illinois Lottery launched a statewide ad campaign entitled Big Dreams. The TV spot will air during this weekend’s highly visible Chicago broadcast of Super Bowl XLVI (click here to view the Super Bowl spot).

“The re-launch of Powerball gave the Illinois Lottery an opportunity to see what one of the outstanding creative agencies in the state, commonground, could do with a significant marketing challenge.Communicating a change in price and prizes is complicated, but they made it simple and visually beautiful,” said Michael Jones, Superintendent of the Illinois Lottery.

Commonground was awarded the multicultural Illinois Lottery business during the fourth quarter of 2011. “Commonground was excited to be given the assignment to announce the new Powerball changes to all the people of Illinois. We are also thrilled to work with the Illinois Lottery’s marketing team,” said commonground co-founder and managing partner, Sherman Wright.

The Lottery filmed the spot between Christmas and New Year’s Eve in communities across the state filming in several Illinois towns and highlighting many state landmarks As with all lottery games, proceeds from Powerball will benefit the Common School Fund and the Capital Projects Fund.
