OTTAWA, IL—May 31, 20012—Susan Walker considers herself blessed and “very, very, lucky.” Most people would agree, given the fact she recently claimed a top prize in the Lottery’s $4 million Gold Bullion instant game.
Thanks to the win, Walker, 58, is retiring from her job of 22 years at Sabic Innovative Plastics in Ottawa. “It’s been a good place to work, but it can’t compare to my new job as a full-time grandma,” she said.
Walker has three adult sons, Chad, 37; Joshua, 35; and Adam, 31—plus nine grandchildren that range from 7 months to 14 years. She is also blessed with three lovely daughters-in-law; “They are really daughters to me,” said Walker. “I couldn’t have asked for more; it’s unconditional love all the way around.”
Walker will save and invest most of her Lottery windfall. She plans to splurge by taking her children and their families to Disney World at some point. In addition, she is going to buy herself a new sewing machine.
Walker purchased her winning $4 million Gold Bullion ticket last week at Express Lane, 1441 N. Columbus in Ottawa, which served as the backdrop today for an oversized check presentation to Walker from Lottery officials. The Ottawa store will receive $40,000 for selling the winning ticket.
After purchasing the ticket last week, and while still in the Express Lane parking lot, Walker scratched the ticket in her car. When it showed a $4-million prize, she couldn’t believe her eyes, and had a hard time finding her voice. She went back into the store (with her car still running) and asked store personnel to confirm her win (which they did, amidst tears of joy all around).
“I’m still in a bit of shock,” said Walker, “but I know it’s real, and I feel very, very lucky.”
Walker opted for a one-time payment of $2.4 million (rather than $4 million over 20 years). After required state and federal withholding, her final, one-time Lottery payment will total $1.68 million.
The odds of winning a top prize in the Lottery’s $4 Million Gold Bullion game are 1 in 2.64 million. Walker is the first person to claim a top prize (four of five top prizes are not yet claimed). In addition, the game offers ten $1million prizes, eight of which are not yet claimed.
