Hanover Park, IL, November 19, 2012— Lorraine Smith and her co-workers at A Shear Delight Beauty Salon have been playing the lottery together as a group for eight years. “We girls don’t give up,” said Smith, the organizer of the group. And it’s a good thing they didn’t! The group of nine lucky ladies won $1 million in this year’s Illinois Lottery Halloween Raffle.
Today, Illinois Lottery officials presented the group an oversized, commemorative check for $1,000,000. Their winning Raffle ticket, number 198392, was one of four winning tickets that paid out a top prize of $1 million. “I’m going to display this big check in the salon,” said Donna Carman, who owns A Shear Delight and is a member of the group.
“There were 509 winners in the Halloween Millionaire Raffle game, including four $1-million winners,” said Illinois Lottery Superintendent Michael Jones. “All our winners have beautiful stories, but the story of these nine ladies—who work in a beauty salon—is cuter than most, and shows anything’s possible!”
Every week the ladies each put $2 into a pool for the group to play various Illinois Lottery games. The group members, who live in Bloomingdale, Hoffman Estates, Roselle, Bartlett, Huntley, Elk Grove Village and Hanover Park, take turns buying the tickets where they live. “We think it’s good luck to buy our tickets in different places,” Smith said. Their winning Raffle ticket was purchased by Margot Tellone at 4T Liquor Corral located at 1004 East Irving Park Road in Streamwood. The store will receive a bonus of $10,000 from the Lottery for selling the winning raffle ticket.
Each of the group members will receive $111,111.11, less required withholding. When asked about plans for the winnings Smith said, “I’m going to pay bills and fix up some things around my house. The girls and I still can’t believe we won a million dollars. This will make life more comfortable for all of us.”
This is not the first time a large group has won a $1 million Raffle prize. In March, 113 people who live in or near the tiny southern Illinois town of Millersburg IL shared a $1,000,000 prize from the St. Patrick’s Day Millionaire Raffle.
Like all raffle games held to date, the recent Halloween Millionaire Raffle offered four $1 million prizes, five $100,000 prizes, and 500 $1,000 prizes. A total of 509 winning tickets were drawn on October 31, 2012. The other three $1million dollar winning tickets were purchased at Ayerco, 203 North 6th, in Petersburg; 4 T Liquor Corral, 1004 East Irving Park Road, in Streamwood; and 7-Eleven, 296 Cary Algonquin Road in Cary. All Raffle prizes, including the $1milllion top prizes, are paid in a lump sum.
Lottery players who purchased a ticket for the recent raffle drawing can check the Lottery website www.illinoislottery.com, or visit one of the Lottery’s 8,100 retailers across the state to see if they were one of 509 lucky winners.
Raffle tickets cost $20 and were sold in sequential order at Lottery retailers. Winners can claim their prizes at one of five Illinois Lottery Claim Centers located in Chicago, Des Plaines, Fairview Heights, Rockford or Springfield.
