Barrington, IL—July 16, 2013 — Winning $250,000 in Mega Millions is a “life-changing” event, according to Aaron Vargo, who matched the first five numbers — 03 - 14 - 17 - 40 - 50 - (22) — in the Friday May 21 drawing winning $250,000. He and his wife plan to pay off their Barrington home, buy a new car, and save the rest of the Lottery windfall.
Vargo, a 43 year-old statistical analyst, was working in the yard the day after the drawing when he decided to take a break and check the winning Mega Millionsnumbers online. He held his ticket next to his laptop and called his wife, Kristie, to come over and said, “Look at this ticket and at the screen. Tell me, what do you see?” Kristie, who found herself in a state of shock, said she could not believe her eyes.
Vargo spent much of the weekend thinking about how to tell his children about the win. When he shared the news with his son, the little one said he wanted an XBOX game system. His 13 year-old daughter took him by surprise asking, “Daddy do we need to move? Do I need to change schools?” Vargo laughed and hugged his daughter saying, “No honey, we are not going to move. This is a good thing. You are going to have an awesome birthday.” When asked what advice he would give to other lottery players he said, “It only takes $1 to win.”
A regular Mega Millions player, Vargo buys one ticket once a week. He purchased his winning ticket at Gateway Newstand, 2 North Riverside Plaza, in Chicago. The retailer will receive a $2,500 bonus, 1 percent of the prize amount, for selling the winning ticket.
