Oak Park, IL—October 31, 2013 — Ten years ago, Souksavanh Phomphakoy’s uncle gave him an extraordinary gift - the opportunity to study and learn English in the United States. “I could not have come here without my uncle's help and I am extremely grateful,” said Phomphakoy, who can now thank his uncle in a very big way. Phomphakoy won $8.75 million when the numbers on his Lotto Quick Pick ticket - 04 - 13 - 18 - 19 - 28 - 45 - were an exact match in the October 19 drawing. He plans to split the windfall with his uncle.
A regular Lotto player, Phomphakoy was with a friend when he bought his ticket at an Oak Park gas station. The day after the drawing, his friend read in the newspaper that someone from Oak Park won the Lotto jackpot and he urged Phomphakoy to check his ticket. After work Phomphakoy went straight home to check the winning Lotto numbers on www.illinoislottery.com. When the winning numbers matched the numbers on his ticket, it seemed too good to be true so he double-checked the newsfeed on his Facebook page. He realized that he was indeed the jackpot winner. “I told my uncle right away and at first he didn’t believe me. Once I showed him the ticket he became speechless. When I told him I wanted to share the winnings with him, he hugged me tightly.”
For the past ten years Phomphakoy, 34, has been working as a manager at his uncle’s Chinese restaurant in Oak Park. His plans for the windfall include buying a new house, enrolling in additional courses at Triton College and visiting his parents in Laos, Southeast Asia. “I can’t wait to see my parents and tell them I can now visit more often.”
The winning ticket was purchased at Clark Oak Park, 330 Chicago Avenue in Oak Park. Today, Illinois Lottery officials presented Phomphakoy a ceremonial check for $8.75 million. He also presented Clark Oak Park a ceremonial check for $87,500, their bonus for selling the winning ticket. After required state and federal withholding, Phomphakoy will receive $6,125,000.
Lotto drawings take place Monday, Thursday and Saturday nights at 9:22 p.m. For more information, please visit www.illinoislottery.com.
