Gillespie, IL – April 3, 2014— After working 42 years for Olin Brass in East Alton, machinist Bill Hayes set his retirement date for May 1. “My retirement party will be even more of a celebration now!” said Hayes. The lucky Gillespie resident won $1million in the Illinois Lottery’s St. Patrick’s Day Millionaire Raffle.
Hayes bought his winning Raffle ticket – number 391517 - at Gillespie Motomart, 415 South Macoupin Street. When he heard from his brother-in-law that one of the $1million winning St. Patrick’s Day Millionaire Raffle tickets was sold there, Hayes went back to the Motomart to check his ticket. He immediately called his wife Diana to tell her the news. “I thought he was pulling my leg! I didn’t believe him because we never win anything - I don’t even win at bingo!” Diana said.
Bill and Diana have been married 43 years and are lifelong residents of Gillespie. Diana has worked for Heritage Health in Gillespie for 39 years. They plan to share the windfall with family, including their two sons and grandchildren. They also plan to invest wisely for their retirement.
Today, Illinois Lottery officials presented Bill and Diana an oversized, ceremonial check for $1million; Motomart received a ceremonial check for $10,000, the store’s Lottery bonus for selling a winning Raffle ticket. This is the second $10,000 St. Patrick’s Day Millionaire Raffle bonus for Motomart, which sold two of the four $1million winning tickets in this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Millionaire Raffle. Swansea resident Delbert May bought a $1million winning Raffle ticket at Motomart, 733 North Bluff Road in Collinsville.
The St. Patrick’s Day Millionaire Raffle offered four $1 million prizes, five $100,000 prizes, and 500 $1,000 prizes. A total of 509 winning tickets were drawn on March 18, 2014. The other $1million prize winning tickets were purchased in Bloomingdale and Decatur. Lottery players who purchased a St. Patrick’s Day Millionaire Raffle ticket can check the Lottery website www.illinoislottery.com, or visit one of the Lottery’s 8,200 retailers across the state to see if they are one of the 509 lucky winners.
Raffle tickets cost $20 and were sold in sequential order at Lottery retailers. Winners can claim their prizes at one of five Illinois Lottery Prize Centers located in Chicago, Des Plaines, Fairview Heights, Rockford and Springfield. Raffle winners have one year from the drawing date to claim their prize.
