Joliet, IL – July 18, 2014 – Les Saal and his wife Beth plan to travel the United States after becoming the Illinois Lottery’s newest multimillionaires. “We’ve always wanted to see Mount Rushmore and the Grand Canyon, so these two locations will be our first stops as we travel this beautiful country!” The lucky Tiskilwa residents won the $10,250,000 Lotto jackpot when the numbers on Les’ Quick Pick ticket matched all six numbers - 01 – 07 – 27 – 35 – 45 – 47 – in the Saturday, June 28, drawing.
While on their way to visit friends in Shorewood, Les made a quick stop at a store in Joliet and bought his ticket. “I’ve been a regular Lotto player for years. I always thought I would win big someday, but not this big!” A few days after the drawing, Les was at a gas station in Princeton when he remembered to check his ticket. The message ‘file a claim’ displayed on the scanner. Thinking he had won “at least $1,000” Les immediately went home to check the winning numbers on illinoislottery.com and discovered he had hit the jackpot. “I couldn’t breathe.”
The Saals have lived in Tiskilwa for 40 years. They are both retired; Les after working over 40 years for LCN Door Closers and Beth after 45 years in the banking industry. Plans for the windfall include investing, sharing with their three children and setting up college funds for their four grandchildren. When asked if they had any advice for other players, Les said, “Well we’re a little older and I’ve played Lotto for a long time, so maybe it is true that good things come to those who wait.”
The winning ticket was purchased at United Liquor Mart, 1532 Route 59 in Joliet. The retailer will receive a bonus of $102,500, 1 percent of the prize amount, for selling the winning ticket. Today, Illinois Lottery officials presented Les and Beth a ceremonial check for their $10,250,000 prize; United Liquor Mart received a ceremonial check for its $102,500 selling bonus. The Saals chose to take the cash option of $5,976,672.50, which is subject to state and federal withholding.
The Lotto drawing takes place Monday, Thursday and Saturday nights at 9:22 p.m. For more information, please visit www.illinoislottery.com.
