In Illinois, 21% of cases diagnosed with HIV infection between 2019-2023 received an AIDS diagnosis within 12 months (compared to 24% of cases diagnosed in the previous five years).

The number of new HIV diagnoses amongst women was down 21% between 2010 and 2019.
Improved Treatments
Thanks to improved treatments, people living with HIV/AIDS are living longer lives – nearly one-half (49%) of all people living with HIV are over the age of 50; 1 in 4 (25%) are aged 60 and older.

Thanks to improved treatments, people living with HIV/AIDS can expect to live long lives. There are approximately 37,000 people living with HIV disease (PLWHA) in Illinois of whom over two-thirds (68%) are over the age of 40.
