Vietnam Veteran Wins $40,000 Mega Millions Prize

WINTHROP HARBOR, IL — May 8, 2018 — Joseph Loney of Winthrop Harbor won a $40,000 Mega Millions Megaplier prize when his ticket matched four out of the five numbers, plus the Mega Ball number, in the Tuesday, May 1, drawing. The winning numbers were  –  02 - 07 - 20 - 55 - 70  – and the Mega Ball number was 01. The Megaplier number drawn was 4, turning Loney’s prize into $40,000.

Loney, a Vietnam veteran, plans to use his winnings to fulfill his dream of visiting the Civil War battlefield and other Civil War haunts in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. “My ship came in!” Loney said of his win. In addition to the Gettysburg trip, Loney said he plans to use his winnings to fix his car.

Loney bought his $40,000 winning ticket at Jewel, 1400 21st St., in Zion. The retailer received a bonus of $400, one percent of the prize amount, for selling the winning ticket. More than 19,500 Illinois players won prizes ranging from $2 to $40,000 in this Mega Millions drawing. Mega Millions drawings are conducted on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10 p.m. CST.
