Quincy Retailer Reacts To Selling $1.04 Billion Powerball Jackpot-Winning Ticket

CHICAGO, August 14, 2026 — The day after a $1.04 billion Powerball® jackpot-winning ticket was sold at the store, employees at the 36th Street Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh in Quincy are still taking it all in — with excitement, plenty of curiosity and one big question on everyone’s mind: Who has the winning ticket?
Jon Marshall, manager of Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh at 310 N. 36th St. in Quincy, got the news around 3 a.m. Thursday when a manager at another Fast & Fresh called to tell him the store had sold the winning Powerball ticket. Marshall quickly checked the Illinois Lottery website to confirm — and then remembered he had purchased a Powerball ticket himself.
“I then went to the kitchen to grab my ticket — I bought one too, but sadly, it wasn’t me,” Marshall said with a laugh.
Now, the store is buzzing as customers come in to check their tickets and speculate about the mystery winner.
“I always tell my customers that it would be great to put Quincy on the map by winning a lottery ticket from our store, and sure enough, somebody did it,” Marshall said. “I hope it’s someone from Quincy — the winner will now be the richest person in town.”
For selling the jackpot-winning ticket, Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh will receive a $500,000 retailer bonus.
“This is an exciting time for our store and the Quincy community,” Marshall said. “We’re thrilled to know that a life-changing Powerball ticket was purchased at our Hy-Vee location, and we couldn’t be happier for whoever the lucky winner may be.”
The $1.04 billion jackpot is the second-largest lottery prize ever won in Illinois. The winning ticket matched all six numbers — 4, 26, 66, 67, 69 and Powerball 9 — from Wednesday night’s drawing. The jackpot winner has one year to claim the prize.
In addition to the jackpot, an Illinois Lottery player won $100,000 and three players won $50,000 Powerball prizes in Wednesday night’s drawing.
Since the jackpot run began May 4, Illinois Lottery players have purchased more than $53.8 million in Powerball tickets, generating more than $21.5 million for the Common School Fund, which supports K–12 public education throughout Illinois.
